RAD REVIEW - BLACK FLAG “Down In The Dirt”

It’s BLACK FLAG. Deal with it, chumps.

It was quite surprising when seemingly out of nowhere word dropped that not only had BLACK FLAG reunited but they were releasing a new record. All this, on the heels of the ex-Black Flag super group, FLAG.

Needless to say, there was and is a lot of buzz. Good. Bad. I myself, was and am quite excited by both groups.

A quick background on my POV: My first BLACK FLAG record was MY WAR. Then I got EVERYTHING WENT BLACK. I came around it all backwards, with DAMAGED being one of the last records I heard. So, the older tunes like “Damaged”, “Police Story”, “Gimme Gimme Gimme”, etc. Those all sounded off to me, I was used to the earlier versions. (Of course, over time, I’ve come to love these versions, too.

My era of BLACK FLAG was Greg, Henry, Kira and Bill. I saw this line-up twice. MY WAR, IN MY HEAD, SLIP IT IN. However, I was friends with a guy, a little older than me, he was from D.C., who was a kind of punk rock mentor to me. He was dismissive of this line-up. His BLACK FLAG was the 5 piece line-up with DEZ and Robo.

The point is, there have been multiple singers, drummers, bass players all in assorted combinations. The only consistent is Greg Ginn. So who’s to say this version of BLACK FLAG isn’t BLACK FLAG? If you wanted a “true” BLACK FLAG reunion what would you even be talking about? The original, original line-up? The version from DECLINE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION with Ron Reyes? The “classic” Henry line-up?

I saw BLACK FLAG at the end, with Greg and Henry, plus Anthony Martinez and Ce’l. Was that NOT BLACK FLAG? Seems to be, if you have Greg. You have BLACK FLAG. If you have Greg and Ron, that’s as legit as the version of BLACK FLAG I saw in 1986.

Besides, if you are excepting BLACK FLAG 2013 to sound like BLACK FLAG 1980, it’s folly. It’d be false, too. One thing about BLACK FLAG, Greg Ginn was always moving on. (And you could argue, Greg should have a new singer and keep plugging forward, but I’m not going to support that argument here. Although, I can make it.)
Have you actually listened to IN MY HEAD lately? BLACK FLAG is no different than say, Aerosmith, KISS., et al. Everyone loves and remember the hits, but those lesser known tunes or later lps. Eh. Not so much.
Personally, I love “You’re Not Evil” but it’s not getting spun much on my town’s college punk show.

So put “Down In The DIrt” in context of the BLACK FLAG discography. Stick this tune on a mix between “White Minority” and “Crazy Girl” and after a few listens it’ll feel ok. I’m not arguing it’s the greatest BLACK FLAG tune, it’s not in the top ten. But it’s no better or worse than half the tunes they’ve ever done. So relax, crank it up and enjoy. I mean, BLACK FLAG in 2013? Yes! Enjoy it.

It has been the long held opinion of the STAY RAD P MILLER Musicology Center that the all-time greatest male rock voice is Carl Wilson of the BEACH BOYS. His angelic vocals, potentially the voice of God himself coming through a human being, have made many weep with joy. But, we have concluded, after many, many, many hours of deep immersion research, that the all-time greatest male rock voice is Dez Cadena of BLACK FLAG. His voice, carrying the passion and emotional wallop of a punch to the neck, also causes weeping. Um, of joy.
NOTE - It is with a heavy burden the STAY RAD P MILLER Musicology Center makes this adjustment and does not make this decision lightly. Please help us by sharing this announcement. Thank you.
